Researching through experiencing/Discovering Cetinje’s diversity

Cetinje, often referred to as the historical and cultural capital of Montenegro, is widely recognized for its impressive museums and royal heritage. However, our recent research revealed that there is so much more to this city than one can immediately see. As tourism students, we got the opportunity to do a tourism destination research project in Cetinje, and found out how much potential the city has, beyond its cultural offer.

Our first impression of Cetinje included the number of day tourists and guided tours. Many people spend a few hours here to visit the museums and then continue their holiday elsewhere. However, during our stay, we spoke with many locals, tourists, tour guides, and with Montour. We had the privilege of joining a mini tour with a passionate local tour operator (Montour) who knows everything about Cetinje and Montenegro. He showed us the city’s hidden gems and shared stories that only someone deeply connected to the region could know. This experience highlighted one of the most striking aspects of our visit: the Montenegrin people’s immense pride in their country and their enthusiasm for sharing it with visitors.

Locals spoke with pride about their traditions, natural landscapes, and cultural heritage, while tourists praised the authenticity of their experiences.

Montenegro is not yet a widely known touristic destination, and while some might wish to preserve the calm and serenity that can still be found in Cetinje, this would be a waste of the city’s versatility and potential.

Centrally located, Cetinje is a perfect base for exploring Montenegro’s beautiful surroundings. Cetinje is more than just museums—it’s a centre of history, nature, and hospitality.
