A journey to Biogradska Gora National Park and the Monastery Morača is a passage into the heart of Montenegro’s rich landscapes and spiritual heritage.  Biogradska Gora National Park, one of Europe’s last primeval forests, where nature thrives untouched and serene. The park’s ancient trees—some over 500 years old—stand like guardians of history, while the deep green foliage and mirror-like lakes reflect the beauty and purity of the region. The centerpiece, Biogradsko Lake, is a tranquil oasis surrounded by towering mountains and lush forests. Walking its trails, you feel enveloped in timelessness, with birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves providing a peaceful soundtrack. The air here is incredibly fresh, and every step feels like a communion with nature in its most pristine form.

Even the road to the park is an adventure itself because it follows the route that goes through the Moraca River Canyon, known for its sharp cliffs and opalescent watercolors. Furthermore, through canyon we will stop and visit the Morača Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries (it was founded in 1252.) in Montenegro which is built on the edge of the canyon.  Built in the 13th century, this spiritual refuge rests on the banks of the Morača River and is framed by rugged cliffs and gentle hills. The monastery’s stone walls, worn smoothly by time, speak of endurance and faith. Inside, ancient frescoes tell stories from the Bible, rendered in hues that have retained their beauty through centuries of devotion and care. The peacefulness here is palpable, inviting contemplation and a deep sense of reverence. The monks tend to the grounds, growing herbs and flowers, adding to the serene ambiance that surrounds this sacred place.

After that, we will continue our tour towards the National Park which is breathtaking sanctuary nestled in the heart of Montenegro, where nature’s beauty unfolds in vibrant hues and serene landscapes.

The park features towering beech trees, crystal-clear rivers and an enchanting array of wildlife. Even to a less knowledgeable visitor, this forest leaves no one indifferent. With its trees over five hundred years old, some of them soaring to 60m high and glacier lakes – all of this makes this park a unique geo-morphological region not only for tourists but for researchers also. Apart from the forest, when you enter the National Park, the first thing you’ll see is its signature Biogradska Gora Lake. This lake provides a mesmerizing view and reflection of the whole environment. Here you can choose between embarking on a boat trip or even kayaking. For those who like to enjoy nature a bit more, Biogradska Gora is one of the best marked national parks in the region. You can take a smaller path through the forest or a bigger one, that goes all around the Lake.

After we’re finished with the walks or any other activity, we can complete the day at our friend’s restaurant in the canyon where you’ll try some of their best specialties.

Moraca River Canyon

The second largest river canyon in Montenegro

The witness of history

Monastery Morača is one of the most important and oldest monasteries in Montenegro, which was founded in 1252. The monastery is situated on the plain next to the Moraca River and under the monastery flows a beautiful waterfall which is called Svetigora. The monastery complex consists of two churches which bigger one is devoted to the Assumption of Mary and minor chapel is dedicated to St. Nicholas, beautiful garden with inns, library and graveyard where monks has been buried. Besides the architecture, which is characteristic of this monastery, what is also interesting is the painting of the monastery. The artistic beauty of the monastery is far famous, mainly because of the frescoes with which it has been painted. By the period of origin frescoes date from two periods. Ones were painted in XIII century and the others in two periods in XVI and in XVIII century. “Raven feeds prophet Ilija” fresco made in XIII century is the oldest and the most famous fresco of the Moraca monastery which is just a part of the series of frescoes with which the life of this saint prophet Ilija is being described.
