CETINJE, THE BIGGEST STORY

Cetinje, the heart of Montenegro’s history and culture, is a captivating blend of architectural styles that reflect its rich past. Nestled amidst the dramatic peaks of Lovćen Mountain, the city’s buildings tell stories of royal dynasties, foreign influences, and a nation’s struggle for independence. The Cetinje Monastery, a masterpiece of medieval Montenegrin architecture, stands as a symbol of the country’s Orthodox faith. Its simple yet elegant design, with whitewashed walls and red-tiled roofs, harmonizes with the surrounding landscape. Nearby, the Biljarda, once the residence of the renowned poet-prince Petar II Petrović Njegoš, offers a glimpse into the lives of Montenegro’s royal family. This charming building, with its distinctive neoclassical facade, houses a fascinating collection of historical artifacts.
As Cetinje grew in importance, it attracted architects from across Europe, who brought with them a variety of styles. The main street, Njegoševa Ulica, is lined with elegant 19th-century buildings, including the imposing Clock Tower and the former Royal Palace, now the President’s residence. These structures, with their ornate facades and grand interiors, showcase the influence of Baroque, Neo-Romanesque, and Art Nouveau architecture.
Beyond the city center, Cetinje’s architectural heritage extends to its surrounding villages. The traditional stone houses, with their distinctive red-tiled roofs, offer a glimpse into the region’s rural past. These charming buildings, often adorned with intricate wood carvings, reflect the ingenuity and craftsmanship of local builders.

In this unique adventure, we are going to explore the magic world of the underground Lipa cave. The cave is located 5km from Cetinje, under the viewpoint of Belveder, and has 2.5 km long passages rich in stalactites and other ornaments rarely seen in other caves. Lipa cave represents the cave’s natural beauty filled with lakes, underground streams and is the first and only tourist show cave in Montenegro now. Biogradska Gora & Monastery Morača trip

This is a special tour that takes us to the National Park Biogradska Gora, one of the three remaining primeval rainforests in Europe. Even the road to the park is an adventure itself because it follows the route that goes through the Moraca River Canyon, known for its sharp cliffs and opalescent watercolors. Furthermore, we will take a walk in the garden of Monastery Moraca, which is built on the edge of the canyon. After that, we will continue our tour towards the National Park. Even to a less knowledgeable visitor, this forest leaves no one indifferent. With its trees over five hundred years old and some of them soar to 60m high and glacier lakes, all of this makes this park unique geo-morphological region not only for tourists but to researchers also. Apart from the forest, when you enter the National Park, the first thing you’ll see is its signature Biogradska Gora Lake. This lake provides a mesmerizing view and reflection of the whole environment. Here you can choose between swimming in it, embarking on a boat trip, and even kayaking. For those who like to enjoy nature a bit more, Biogradska Gora is one of the best marked national parks in the region. You can take a smaller path through the forest or a bigger one, that goes all around the Lake. On the last adventure day, we made it possible to connect two different adventures and landscapes in one day, the panoramic ride above the sea and Rivera on one side and the largest lake on Balkan Peninsula, Skadar Lake on the other. The islet itself is quite exclusive, because it belongs to the Aman Resorts, and we have a chance to visit and feel its magic from the inside (optional). After a short drive, we continue to our next stop Monastery Rezevici. We will take a walk through two churches (Uspenje Bogorodice and Saint Trinity) and the monastery itself. The churches are known for their fresco paintings and beautiful gardens and the monastery is under the protection of UNESCO. The path leads us further to Petrovacka Gora with a few photo viewpoints, after which we head towards our main event of the day, the visit of Lake Skadar and the old fisherman’s village Virpazar. From here we’ll embark on a boat trip on a unique lake ride with optional lunch included because guess what? The boat is a floating restaurant! Soon as you start your journey on the boat, you’ll ended encounter with the flora and fauna of paradise-rich habitats of many birds, fish, and plant endemic species. A Table of Abundance
One of the most cherished expressions of hospitality in Montenegro is found at the dining table. Guests are often treated to a feast that reflects the rich culinary heritage of the region. Families take great pride in preparing traditional dishes using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. From *pršut* (cured ham) and *njeguški sir* (cheese) to hearty stews and freshly caught seafood, every meal is an invitation to savor the flavors of Montenegro. As you sit at the table, you’ll find that sharing food is not just about nourishment; it’s a celebration of community and togetherness. It is customary to raise a glass of local wine or *rakija* (fruit brandy) in a toast, wishing health and happiness to all present. The warmth of the Montenegrin spirit flows freely, making every meal an occasion to create lasting memories.
Cultural Richness
Montenegro’s hospitality is deeply rooted in its cultural richness. Guests are often welcomed into homes, where families proudly showcase their traditions, from folk music and dance to handcrafted artisanal goods. Visitors may find themselves participating in local festivities, where they can experience the vibrant rhythms of traditional music and the joyous spirit of Montenegrin celebrations. These moments allow travelers to immerse themselves in the culture, creating connections that transcend borders.

19th September 2024

My 7 days tour of Montenegro was superb. I was based in a 5 star hotel in Cetinje & it was a real pleasure to come back to my suite every afternoon having seen & experienced yet more highlights of this amazing country. My guide & driver, Bobo, was able to answer all my questions so I learned a great deal about the history & culture. I really appreciated his company.

Montenegro is an underrated gem! The tour was perfect even though the weather wasn't at all times, but Borislav, our tour escort made sure we plan our day such that we make most of the sunny days as well as enjoy the rainy ones. The tour was well organized, well paced, communication was great and we were well taken care of at every step. We'd love to visit again someday cause 8 days isn't enough to explore this beautiful country!

The tour in Montenegro was really nice. Montours was an excellent partner from the planning stage to the very end. And our tour guide, Tihomir, was perfect! Montenegro is a lovely country and we hope to return to see more of it. We had some difficulties with the payment function on TourRadar's website and some of the communication seemed complicated, but we managed. Thank you! Carolyn

Montenegro is an underrated gem! The tour was perfect even Montenegro was a beautiful country and having a private guide was an awesome way to experience many parts of it. Bogdan was a calm and competent driver on the steep and winding roads, and shared restaurant recommendations and anecdotes about the country, as well as some laughs with us. We had the good fortune to accept an offer to switch our last two nights to Cetinje, a beautiful town that it was great to explore as it was very different from Budva, which we also very much enjoyed.
